Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) A is a type of power supply that uses high-frequency switching and energy storage components like inductors and capacitors to convert electrical power efficiently. Unlike linear power supplies, which regulate voltage by dissipating excess energy as heat, SMPS units rapidly switch the input on and off and control the output using feedback mechanisms. This approach allows for much higher efficiency and reduced heat generation, which is why SMPS is commonly used in everything from laptops and TVs to industrial systems. The trade-off is that they can introduce electrical noise and are generally more complex in terms of design and repair. Still, for most modern electronics, SMPS has become the standard because of its performance, size, and energy-saving benefits.
